Western Pennsylvania high school teams face a compressed postseason schedule this week after the Western Pennsylvania Inter-Scholastic League moved several semifinal games to midweek. The shift impacts field hockey and soccer rosters that previously planned for weekend matchups. Athletes now have fewer rest days between the end of the regular season and the start of these high-stakes elimination rounds. The league cited scheduling conflicts to accommodate these changes.
In Class 2A field hockey, undefeated Shady Side Academy, which holds a 16-0 record, hosts Penn-Trafford on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The game is scheduled for a single evening slot to allow for post-season logistics. Fox Chapel, with a 10-4-1 record, plays Peters Township at 6 p.m. the same day in the other 2A semifinal. These matches determine which teams advance to the regional final.
Class 3A field hockey semifinals occur on Thursday. Hempfield, sitting at 5-10, travels to Pine-Richland, which has a 13-5 record, for a 7 p.m. start. Mt. Lebanon, holding a 10-5 record, hosts North Allegheny, 10-7-1, at 6 p.m. on the same night. The Class A semifinals also take place on Wednesday, with four games spread across two venues. Ellis School plays Aquinas Academy at Shady Side Academy, while Winchester Thurston faces Oakland Catholic at Mt. Lebanon.
Boys soccer quarterfinals in Class 4A are scheduled for Thursday. Norwin, with a 15-0-1 record, faces Upper St. Clair. Mt. Lebanon hosts North Allegheny, and Seneca Valley plays Pine-Richland. Peters Township takes on Fox Chapel in the final 4A matchup. Class 3A quarterfinals are set for Wednesday, featuring Hampton at Plum, Chartiers Valley at Trinity, Mars at Franklin Regional, and Central Valley at West Allegheny. All four games start at 7 p.m.
Class 2A boys soccer quarterfinals occur on Thursday. Avonworth plays Quaker Valley, Ambridge faces South Park, Deer Lakes takes on Belle Vernon, and North Catholic hosts Shady Side Academy. Class A quarterfinals are scheduled for Wednesday at four different locations. Bentworth plays Freedom at Peters Township Middle School, and Beaver County Christian faces Springdale at North Allegheny. Winchester Thurston hosts Eden Christian at USS Community Field, and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart plays Riverview at Avonworth.
Girls soccer quarterfinals in Class 4A are scheduled for Wednesday. Upper St. Clair travels to Mt. Lebanon, and Seneca Valley goes to Fox Chapel. Canon-McMillan plays Peters Township, and Norwin hosts North Allegheny. Class 3A quarterfinals take place on Thursday, with Penn-Trafford facing Hampton and Mars playing South Fayette. Shaler takes on Elizabeth Forward, and Montour plays Plum. Class 2A quarterfinals are set for Wednesday, featuring Quaker Valley at South Park, Central Valley at Burrell, Deer Lakes at Freeport, and North Catholic at Avonworth.
Hockey results from Monday showed mixed outcomes for top seeds. Seneca Valley defeated Upper St. Clair 4-1 in Class 3A. In Class 2A, Fox Chapel and Shaler's game was a no contest. North Catholic beat Shady Side Academy 7-1 in Class A. Quaker Valley won 9-3 over Richland, and North Hills defeated Meadville 8-2.
