Travel insurance payouts are dominated by trip cancellations, interruptions, and delays, which accounted for almost 95% of total expenditures in 2024 according to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association. This statistic underscores why these coverages form the core of most standard policies.

These plans reimburse travelers for non-refundable expenses when a trip is cut short or halted. Common covered scenarios include sickness, a death in the immediate family, jury duty, and airline schedule changes. If a flight delay forces a traveler to spend a night in a hotel, that cost is typically included under interruption coverage. However, standard policies often exclude non-urgent reasons for canceling, such as missing a birthday party. Travelers seeking protection for those situations usually purchase an optional add-on called Cancel For Any Reason, or CFAR.

Emergency medical coverage serves a different function by addressing gaps in domestic health benefits. Medicare and Medicaid generally do not cover medical costs incurred outside the United States, and many private U.S. health plans follow a similar rule. Travel insurance bridges this gap by paying for injuries, illnesses, and medical evacuations that occur during the trip. Because healthcare costs and availability vary by destination, travelers in areas with limited care options or high prices may find this coverage essential. Before purchasing, individuals should review their existing health insurance to understand current coverage limits and check for exclusions regarding pre-existing conditions.

Baggage coverage protects travelers when luggage is lost, stolen, or damaged. Policies typically reimburse the cost of replacing personal items, but they often impose specific conditions. A delay must usually last at least 12 hours before the benefit kicks in. There are also per-item limits and total caps on the value of lost goods. High-value items like jewelry and electronic devices frequently have lower sublimits compared to standard clothing or toiletries.

The market also offers specialized add-ons for specific risks and activities. These can include coverage for extreme sports, rental cars, cruises, and even pet travel. Some policies extend to business-related cancellations or security deposits. Because coverage limits, exclusions, and costs vary widely between providers, consumers are advised to compare multiple options and review the fine print carefully. It is also prudent to check existing protections from credit cards, homeowners insurance, or renters insurance, as these may already provide a baseline level of travel protection.
