The U.S. House of Representatives is poised for a leadership change according to a new survey, even as Israel holds its first national election since the Hamas attacks of October 2023.

The NPR/PBS News/Marist poll, released Monday, indicates that Democrats hold an eight-point advantage among likely voters on the generic congressional ballot. Domenico Montanaro, an NPR correspondent, noted that while a sweeping wave may not occur, the party is favored to gain control of the chamber.

Financial concerns remain a central driver for voters in the United States. The data shows that one in three Americans reports facing financial hardships, while four in ten say their personal finances are worsening. For Democrats and independents, preserving democracy is a key issue, whereas immigration ranks as the top concern for supporters of the MAGA movement.

President Donald Trump’s approval rating stands at 40 percent, a slight improvement from previous measurements. Despite this, the Senate race remains a toss-up. Montanaro stated that patience is required for many outcomes, as it is unlikely winners will be clear by election night due to close vote counts.

In a related legal development, a federal judge is hearing arguments on the Trump administration's bid to compel California to set aside ballots from voters it alleges may not be citizens. This follows an appeals court's decision last night to decline the administration's request to intervene earlier. Yesterday, the president announced a $1 million reward for tips on voter fraud that lead to a conviction.

Election officials and Democrats are preparing for similar accusations of fraud, a pattern Trump has claimed in every election he has participated in. Eric McDaniel of NPR noted that while the White House says its efforts aim to secure elections, credible evidence of fraud significant enough to affect U.S. outcomes has never been found. Meanwhile, prediction market platform Polymarket has investigated dozens of bets concerning the midterms, according to its head of global intelligence, Shana Bautista.

In Israel, voters are casting ballots today to decide the country's next prime minister. The contest pits Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the longest-serving leader in the country's history, against Gadi Eisenkot, a former military chief promising more diplomacy. This is the first time Israelis have chosen their leaders since the October 7, 2023 attacks.

Ruth Sherlock of NPR reported that high voter turnout is expected, with many Israelis abroad flying home to participate. At a polling station, voter Itamar Ariel expressed the view that only Netanyahu can ensure security, despite the country's problems. Others argue for a change in leadership to trigger an investigation into the security failures of that day, an inquiry Netanyahu has blocked.

While results may begin to emerge by Wednesday morning, the final determination of the prime minister could take days or weeks. This is because the vote count may continue for several days, followed by protracted negotiations between political parties to form a government.
