A new $200 million Maryland plan aims to build power capacity to lower bills. Gov. Wes Moore announced the Megawatts for Maryland initiative on October 26, as reported by Baltimore Chronicle. The program will fund renewable power and battery storage projects to expand electricity supplies. It will distribute up to $100 million annually for two years through the state’s Strategic Energy Investment Fund.

The initiative follows a law that also provided $100 million in direct utility customer relief. The program will help developers finance large-scale renewable generation and energy storage facilities. It aims to deliver several hundred megawatts of new capacity, potentially supplying more than 150,000 homes annually.

The Maryland Energy Administration will oversee a competitive bidding process for eligible renewable energy and storage developers. The program follows two application stages: November 30, 2026, for preliminary applications, and January 22, 2027, for final bidding. Developers must demonstrate eligibility before submitting their final bids.

The program is part of efforts to address electricity demand and rising costs, including pressure from data centers. The new grants are intended to strengthen Maryland’s energy supply and improve affordability over time.
