Alexandria is planting four new trees in the medians along Holland Lane.
Excavation began on Monday, October 26, and is scheduled to last four days, weather permitting. The work requires closing the southbound vehicle and bicycle lanes between Jamieson Avenue and Eisenhower Avenue on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The city directed southbound drivers to use John Carlyle Street as a detour during those hours. Northbound traffic, the adjacent cycle track, and access to sidewalks and Whole Foods Market remain open.
These plantings are the final step in a project that began in 2024 to improve safety on the street. Most construction finished by the end of May this year. That work included adding cycle tracks, new curb ramps, medians, and fresh pavement and lane striping.
The redesign reduced Holland Lane from four lanes to two, with one lane for each direction. Officials also installed flexible bollards, new street signs, and traffic signals. The street runs from Duke Street to Eisenhower Avenue.
City officials noted that 13 crashes occurred on Holland Lane between 2018 and 2024. Six of those incidents involved pedestrians. Preliminary state data shows no crash reports for the street in 2025 or so far in 2026.
