Democrats hold an eight-point lead among likely voters on the generic congressional ballot, according to a new poll conducted by NPR, PBS News, and Marist. The data indicates that Democratic candidates are favored to gain control of the U.S. House of Representatives. This advantage comes as President Trump’s approval rating stands at 40%, a figure that represents a slight improvement over previous measurements.
Domenico Montanaro, an NPR correspondent, noted that while a Democratic loss in the House seems unlikely, the race for the Senate remains a toss-up. He explained that patience is necessary for determining the outcomes of many close races. It is unlikely that winners will be clear by election night, a scenario that is expected during the vote-counting process for tight contests.
The poll also identified specific financial pressures influencing voter sentiment. One in three Americans reported facing financial hardships. Additionally, four in ten respondents stated that their personal finances are worsening. For Democrats and independents, preserving democracy resonated as a key issue. In contrast, immigration ranked as the top concern for supporters of the MAGA movement.
In Israel, voters are casting ballots in a high-stakes election that determines the country's leadership. This is the first time since the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023, that Israelis have chosen their leaders. The vote will decide whether Benjamin Netanyahu, the current far-right prime minister, remains in power or if Gadi Eisenkot, a former military chief, replaces him. Eisenkot has promised a focus on diplomacy and reduced extremism.
Ruth Sherlock of NPR reported that high voter turnout is expected, with many citizens viewing the election as critical for the nation's future. Some Israelis abroad have traveled to the country to participate. At one polling station, voter Itamar Ariel expressed the belief that only Netanyahu can ensure security despite current problems. Other voters seek a change in leadership to trigger an investigation into the security failures of the 2023 attacks, an inquiry that Netanyahu has previously blocked.
Sherlock indicated that initial results showing which side secures the most parliamentary seats may emerge by Wednesday morning. However, the vote count could continue for several days. The determination of the prime minister will likely require days or even weeks of negotiations between the political parties.
