With the 2026 midterms scheduled for Tuesday, President Donald Trump visited the Lincoln Memorial on Monday to announce the completion of repairs to the Reflecting Pool. The visit served as his final public appearance on the campaign trail before voters head to the polls.
The project required several months of work by the Department of the Interior. Trump stated that the pool is now better and more beautiful than it has ever been. He also reiterated his claim that vandalism had contributed to the damage to the structure.
The President credited the Interior Department for the successful outcome. “The people from Interior have been incredible,” he said. “And the pool is now better and more beautiful than it’s ever been before. And we’re very proud of it.”
During his remarks, Trump delivered his closing message to voters who will determine control of Congress for the next two years. He characterized the upcoming vote as the most important midterm election in a lifetime. He criticized the Democratic Party for nominating the most extreme and dangerous slate of candidates in American history.
Pollsters report that the high cost of living is the top issue for voters in this cycle. Trump did not address that specific concern during his speech. Instead, he emphasized a strong and resilient U.S. economy.
Historical data indicates that the party in power typically loses seats during midterm elections. Republicans currently hold a razor-thin majority in Congress. Final polls indicate a strong performance by Democratic candidates for the 2026 election.
