President Donald Trump visited the Lincoln Memorial on Monday to announce the completion of repairs to the Reflecting Pool.
The visit took place one day before the 2026 midterm elections, with control of Congress at stake.
The Interior Department spent months on the project. Trump repeated previous allegations that vandalism had damaged the pool.
“The people from Interior have been incredible. And the pool is now better and more beautiful than it’s ever been before. And we’re very proud of it,” Trump said.
The president also delivered his closing message to voters. He called this the most important midterm election in his lifetime.
“The Democrat Party is nominated in the most extreme and dangerous slate of candidates in American history. These are the most dangerous candidates ever put up,” he stated.
Pollsters report that the high cost of living is the top issue for voters this cycle. Trump did not address that topic during his remarks.
Instead, he described the U.S. economy as strong and resilient.
Historically, the party in power loses seats in midterm elections. Republicans hold a razor-thin majority and hope to defy that trend.
Final polls point to strong Democratic performance in the 2026 elections.
