The atmosphere at Old Trafford shifted from jeers to cheers in the span of 45 minutes. Manchester United fans booed their team off at the half-time break after a sluggish first period, only to witness a frantic second-half comeback that secured a 3-2 victory over Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday. The result offers a temporary reprieve for manager Michael Carrick, whose job had been called into question following recent domestic losses.
Roma controlled the early stages of the match. Matias Soule broke the deadlock by receiving a pass from Rodrigo Mora and driving past goalkeeper Senne Lammens. This goal exploited the space left behind left back Diogo Dalot, who pushed high up the field per Carrick's tactical instructions. Five minutes later, Roma extended their lead to 2-0. After Soule recovered the ball from a weak Harry Maguire clearance, his shot deflected off Ayden Heaven's arm. Donyell Malen converted the resulting penalty.
The first half offered few signs of resistance from the hosts. Amad Diallo was the only United player to consistently carry the ball into dangerous areas, while captain Bruno Fernandes was seen arguing with Carlos Baleba over a pass. United failed to register a single shot on target inside the Roma penalty area during the opening 45 minutes.
Matheus Cunha became the engine of the turnaround after the break. The Brazilian forward forced a penalty, which Fernandes converted on the second attempt after a disputed encroachment call. The momentum built when Bryan Mbeumo struck both posts with a clipped shot. Cunha then equalized after Roma defender Leonardo Balerdi failed to clear the ball, allowing the Brazilian to find the net.
Cunha completed the comeback with the winning goal. He received a pass from substitute Shea Lacey, took the ball to a narrow angle, and fired a powerful finish past the keeper. He later received a late red card for excessive celebration, a minor note in an otherwise dominant individual performance.
The win comes nine days after a defeat to Bournemouth and follows a loss at Como last month. The club's hierarchy supported Carrick after the Bournemouth game, and his players demonstrated commitment on Tuesday. Carrick made no visible tactical changes at the break, instead demanding greater intensity in ball movement from his squad.
The contrast between the passive first half and the aggressive second half remains a focal point for the club. United needed a two-goal deficit to reach their peak performance, a pattern of inconsistency that has plagued the team in recent weeks. The victory provides a platform for the rest of the season, with the next fixture scheduled for the coming week.
