The Philadelphia Eagles dropped to 2-5 on Monday night after a 38-21 loss to the Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field. It marks the team's fifth consecutive defeat, a streak not seen since 2016 under head coach Doug Pederson. The last time the franchise lost five straight was during that 2016 season, with an eight-game slump in 2012 and a seven-game stretch in 1994 rounding out the longer droughts in the last 50 years.
The defensive unit allowed 416 total yards and 204 rushing yards in the contest. These rushing figures represent the second-most the Eagles have surrendered during Vic Fangio's three-year tenure as defensive coordinator. They also stand as the most yards allowed to Dallas since 1993. Javonte Williams of the Cowboys finished with 155 rushing yards and a touchdown, running at an average of 5.4 yards per carry against a defense that entered the week ranked 31st in the NFL in yards per carry allowed.
Tanner McKee made his second consecutive start as the quarterback and completed 23 of 35 passes for 211 yards and one touchdown. He threw an interception in the fourth quarter, his first of the season. Makai Lemon recorded career highs with seven receptions for 67 yards and scored his first professional touchdown on a 15-yard pass from McKee in the third quarter. Lemon's performance came while top wide receivers DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks sat out with injuries.
Saquon Barkley returned to the field after missing two games with a hamstring injury. He rushed for 62 yards on seven carries and scored a touchdown on the Eagles' first drive of the game. The Eagles' defense recorded no sacks, no interceptions, and no forced fumbles in the matchup. Through seven games, the unit has produced only three takeaways and eight sacks. Britain Covey left the game in the first quarter with a knee injury.
The Eagles allowed three touchdown passes to Dak Prescott. The team's secondary has faced 244 passes this season and recorded three interceptions. Quinyon Mitchell remained a consistent presence, but the group struggled with coverage and tackling. The Cowboys' offense operated with ease, as the Eagles stopped them on only two drives all game. The defensive front, including Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis, failed to generate consistent pressure, allowing CeeDee Lamb and Javonte Williams to move the chains frequently.
Landon Dickerson played his first game since a bone bruise sustained in Week 1. He performed solidly at left guard, a marked improvement from his opening day struggle against Washington. The Eagles will now face the Washington Commanders on Sunday night in Week 8. The team enters the bye week with a 2-5 record and questions about its defensive consistency.
The offense managed three scoring drives, including a 17-play, 84-yard sequence in the third quarter that ended in a touchdown. However, the defense could not hold leads or limit field position. The Cowboys extended their winning streak to five games against Philadelphia in this matchup. The Eagles' next opportunity to stop the slide arrives in a few days on the road.
