Byron Donalds won 50.3% of the vote in Tuesday's election, edging out Democrat David Jolly, who received 48.8%. The Associated Press projected the victory for the congressman, marking a change in leadership for the state.
Donalds will succeed Ron DeSantis as governor. He is the first Black person to hold the office in Florida's history. His running mate, former State Senator Bryan Avila, will take the position of lieutenant governor.
In his victory speech in Hollywood, Florida, Donalds said he received a call from Jolly to concede. He also confirmed a call from President Donald Trump. Donalds stated he plans to continue DeSantis's legacy while focusing on lowering insurance premiums and protecting the environment.
The president endorsed Donalds more than a year before the election. Trump effectively blocked other Republican challengers from entering the race. Donalds has distanced himself from the president in recent months but acknowledged the endorsement's role in the campaign.
Donalds told voters he aims to make life in Florida more affordable. He said his goal is to keep streets safe and invest in young people. He noted that many residents are checking their bank accounts daily to see how they can make ends meet.
Donalds said, “I am humbled and grateful beyond measure.” He added, “As your Governor, I will give you everything I have.” He emphasized that his team's daily efforts made the final difference in the close race.
Democrats saw strong turnout during early voting. However, a large number of voters on Election Day propelled Donalds to the top of the polls. Donalds praised Jolly in his speech after securing the win.
