President Donald Trump reversed his travel plans on Friday in Daytona Beach, Florida, announcing he would hold two more rallies on Sunday. The change in schedule came as he urged supporters to vote early in the midterm elections scheduled for Tuesday.
The president had planned to make the Florida stop his final in-person event before Election Day. He intended to switch to telephone rallies for the remainder of the campaign. Instead, he told the crowd he would travel to Iowa and Kansas for back-to-back appearances.
Those two states feature competitive races for the U.S. Senate. The outcomes could determine whether Republicans keep their narrow majority in the chamber. Trump has already visited both states in October to support candidate Roger Marshall in Kansas and Ashley Hinson in Iowa.
"These are the most important midterm elections ever," Trump said to the gathering in Daytona Beach. He framed the upcoming vote as a decision that will shape the final two years of his time in office.
The president described the grueling nature of the final stretch to Byron Donalds, the Florida Republican gubernatorial candidate. "I thought this was going to be my last one, Byron," Trump said. "I thought this was it. I thought I could relax. Twenty-eight days in a row of this crap is a lot."
Trump has spent much of October traveling to energize voters. Republicans are working to increase turnout while facing concerns about the cost of living and dissatisfaction with the current administration. A Republican-controlled Congress would give the president fewer obstacles to advancing his agenda, while a Democratic majority would create more hurdles for his remaining term.
