U.S. District Judge Ada Brown serves on the federal bench in the Northern District of Texas, a seat she has held since her appointment in 2019. The Fifth Circuit Judicial Council recently ordered a psychiatric examination for the judge as part of an active misconduct investigation.

The review stems from a complaint filed by attorney Ezra Young in May. Young alleged that Brown used racial language during a showcase hearing in April. At that time, Brown had already revoked his permission to practice in her courtroom.

Transcripts obtained by Bloomberg show Brown questioning Young’s motivations. She stated that he appeared to be a White savior coming to save Black lawyers in Texas from New York. The comments occurred while Young represented a Black law professor in a tenure dispute against Southern Methodist University.

Brown repeatedly noted Young’s appearance, describing him as fair-skinned and White-presenting. She suggested that he was intimidated by Black excellence due to his White mediocrity. Brown also labeled him a Chad, defining the term as a male version of a Karen who calls the manager when rules do not apply.

The judge accused Young of sensationalizing the case after reading a news article. The article quoted another law professor comparing the treatment of the plaintiff to a lynching. Brown asked where the reference to lynching came from in her specific case, addressing Young as a main character and social media hero.

In a July 28 filing, Brown defended her demeanor during the hearing. She wrote that she did not believe her conduct was inappropriate, particularly during candid conversations about race. Brown asked the Chief Judge to consider her commitment to mentoring by senior judges when deciding the final disposition.

The Fifth Circuit temporarily removed Brown from her docket earlier this month. She remains the first Black woman to serve on that specific federal court. The council’s order for a psychiatric exam marks a procedural step in the ongoing review of her judicial conduct.
