The Southeastern Conference holds the top spot in the 2026-27 college basketball power rankings. This ranking reflects the league's ability to outspend its rivals on player salaries, a financial advantage that no other conference can currently match.

The SEC's dominance is rooted in its depth and star power. Florida, which won the SEC regular season crown by three games last year, returns a productive core. The league also features seven teams in the preseason top 25. Arkansas and Texas are expected to challenge Florida, with Texas poised for improvement under second-year coach Sean Miller. Tennessee must prove its overhauled roster can generate more offense after a concerning exhibition schedule.

The Big 12 sits second in the rankings, buoyed by the temporary eligibility of key players. Trey Kaufman-Renn of Kansas, Tamin Lipsey of Iowa State, and Darrion Williams of Texas Tech are playing fifth-year seasons due to ongoing legal challenges. Arizona and Houston remain strong contenders, with Arizona returning two starters from a Final Four run. However, the conference's top tier relies heavily on the outcome of these eligibility lawsuits, creating a potential vulnerability if the legal foundation for those rosters collapses.

The Big Ten faces significant questions after producing two Final Four teams and its first national champion since 2000 in 2026. Illinois and Michigan State are viewed as prime title candidates. Michigan, the 2026 champion, must rebuild its front court and replace its coach. Purdue enters a new era following the departure of Braden Smith. Other teams like Indiana, Maryland, and Minnesota are in their second year with new coaching staffs and are seeking to gain traction.

Context for the 2026-27 season includes a trend toward parity among major conferences. Last year, the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, and SEC each sent eight to 10 teams to the NCAA Tournament. The Big East is expected to rebound from a down year, with UConn and St. John's serving as standard bearers. Creighton and Marquette are expected to return to tournament contention, adding depth to the league. The ACC improved from four tournament teams in 2025 to eight in 2026, aided by strong debuts from coaches at Virginia and Miami. The Pac-12 remains a multi-bid league but no longer holds the same status as a high-major conference, with Gonzaga leading its efforts.

LSU represents a distinct wildcard in the SEC under coach Will Wade. This is the first roster Wade has constructed since his return to the program. If the new lineup succeeds, the Tigers will return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since Wade was fired in 2022. The conference's overall strength depends on whether teams outside of Florida can demonstrate they are at a national title level.

The preseason rankings reflect current rosters and financial positions. The SEC leads with 13 of 16 teams making the initial list, compared to 9 of 16 for the Big 12 and 10 of 18 for the Big Ten. These numbers underscore the talent accumulation in the SEC, though regular season results will determine if the financial advantage translates to on-court dominance.
