Apple TV released the mystery thriller "Nocturne" on Friday. The series centers on a homicide detective investigating a string of unexplained disappearances in a small town. Liev Schreiber portrays the lead character, who faces a ticking clock to identify the final missing victim.
The narrative draws from several Swedish crime novels. The plot introduces a central conflict involving an infamous serial killer played by Stephen Graham. A key plot point reveals that Graham's character has been incarcerated while the current crimes occurred. Zazie Beetz joins the cast as an FBI agent who assumes the identity of a psychiatric patient. Her objective is to form a rapport with the killer to extract the truth.
Schreiber described his character as a man who is poor at concealment but is hiding substantial secrets. He noted the challenge of portraying someone who appears open while keeping a tremendous amount from others. Beetz discussed the preparation required for her undercover role. She compared the process to that of a real agent, stating that actors must recite specific details and maintain their cover under extreme pressure.
Schreiber praised Graham's performance, specifically citing a scene where the character asks if a woman is a cop before letting out a strange laugh. Schreiber called the laugh "childlike" and "brilliant," noting that Graham allowed that specific part of himself to emerge in the moment. Beetz described the experience of building the character as "extremely relatable" and "the greatest gig ever." She mentioned speaking with an actual undercover agent to understand how to build out the persona.
The series includes additional cast members, including Rory Culkin. The show is designed to provide viewers with numerous hints and clues throughout the episodes. Beetz said the creators intended to give the audience enough information to feel as though they are solving the puzzle themselves. The production is set against a backdrop of serial killers and undercover operations.
The series is now available for streaming. It presents a story where the truth of the disappearances has deadly consequences. The show combines elements of police procedure with a psychological thriller. The cast and crew worked to ensure the details of the investigation felt grounded in the methods used by real law enforcement agents.
The premiere coincides with the Halloween season. The story involves a detective, an incarcerated suspect, and an infiltrator working to uncover a complex web of lies. The final victim remains the central focus for the main character as the timeline moves toward its conclusion.
