The anticipated public listing of Anthropic, which is expected to occur within the current calendar year, could establish a new benchmark for venture capital returns. Market observers anticipate the company will go public at a valuation reaching $2 trillion. Even before the official exchange listing, the financial stakes held by the firm’s investors represent a significant accumulation of wealth. At the company’s most recent private market valuation of $965 billion, the holdings of various venture capital firms and individual backers already total billions of dollars. This upcoming event is poised to be a substantial financial gain for both the earliest supporters and those who joined later rounds.

The financial trajectory of these investments varies depending on the entry point. Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, is among the most notable beneficiaries. According to PitchBook data, Schmidt invested in the Series A round in 2021 when the startup’s valuation stood at $461 million. He currently holds approximately 1% of the company. At the present private valuation, his stake is worth nearly $10 billion. This figure underscores the rapid appreciation in value for early-stage participants who entered when the company was still in its nascent phase.

Later-stage investors have also seen significant growth, albeit from a higher entry price. Iconiq, an investment firm, wrote a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year. At that time, the company was already valued at $183 billion. That substantial late-stage bet is now valued at $17 billion. Analysts suggest this position has the potential to double in value once the initial public offering is completed. The scale of this single transaction highlights the massive capital flows into the AI sector in recent months.

Menlo Ventures occupies a distinct position as the lead investor in the company’s Series D round. The firm has committed more than $1 billion to Anthropic over time. That cumulative investment is currently valued at $14 billion. Menlo’s strategy reflects a deep commitment to the company’s growth, securing a major equity position that has appreciated significantly since the initial capital injection.

Sequoia, a renowned venture capital firm, entered the landscape more recently. It backed the AI lab for the first time only earlier this year, at which point the company’s valuation had reached $380 billion. A $3 billion investment secured roughly 1% ownership for Sequoia. Despite the high entry valuation, the firm has already more than doubled its initial investment. This performance indicates that even recent entries into the market are yielding substantial returns in a short period.

Other notable players include Sound Ventures and Spark Capital, both of which participated in the 2023 Series C round. Sound Ventures, co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, initially invested $35 million. The firm subsequently funneled an additional $400 million into the company. Their combined stake is now worth billions of dollars. It is worth noting that Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to launch a new venture capital firm, a move that does not alter the firm’s existing holdings.

Spark Capital holds the only known board seat at Anthropic among venture capital firms. The firm invested $75 million in the same 2023 Series C round, when the company was valued at $5 billion. That position has ballooned more than ninetyfold to reach a value of $7 billion. Such exponential growth is rare in the tech sector and illustrates the extraordinary market conditions surrounding leading AI developers.

The stakes for these investors are now tied to the timing and pricing of the upcoming IPO. If the listing achieves the projected $2 trillion valuation, the paper wealth on these balance sheets will convert into liquid assets. For the broader market, the success of this offering will signal the maturity of the AI investment cycle. Investors who entered at various stages, from the $461 million Series A to the $380 billion recent rounds, are all positioned to see their holdings appreciate further. The coming months will determine the final magnitude of this windfall.
