Anthropic's Claude Duet: A Business-First Agent for the Professional Class

Anthropic launches a specialized AI agent designed for professionals and small businesses, distinguishing itself from personal assistants by focusing on background task automation rather than casual errands.

Anthropic has entered the crowded field of personal productivity AI with the release of Claude Duet, a new application aimed squarely at professionals and small businesses. The company positions this new agent as a distinct alternative to the wave of personal assistants currently dominating the market, including Meta Muse, OpenAI Dots, Hark, Instinct, Grok Bot, and Fo. By targeting a specific professional demographic, Anthropic is attempting to carve out a niche in a sector where new tools are launching with increasing frequency.

The company draws a sharp line between Duet and other agents like Instinct, noting that the new tool is not designed for handling casual errands or booking tickets. Furthermore, unlike some competitors, Duet does not provide a live view of its browser activity while it operates. Instead, its primary function is to assist users in automating and managing professional workflows, suggesting actions based on their specific data and creating custom dashboards or daily briefings.

Like other agents in this emerging category, Duet is capable of executing tasks in the background within its own virtual machine. This allows users to continue with their own work while the agent processes information. The system is designed to return to the user only when it requires specific approval, ensuring that the human remains in the loop for critical decisions without being constantly interrupted by minor operational details.

The launch of Duet coincides with a broader industry shift from simple AI assistants to more autonomous agents that can act on behalf of users. Many of Anthropic’s rivals are already pivoting toward business use cases. While Meta’s Muse remains a personal assistant, the company has also released a variant tailored for small businesses with deeper app integrations. Similarly, OpenAI’s Dots features a business-oriented slant through its integration with various professional tools, indicating a competitive race to capture the enterprise and small business sectors.

Under the hood, Duet is built on the Claude Opus 5.5 model and offers extensive connectivity through the Claude Marketplace. The agent can link to over 6,000 different connectors and plugins, allowing it to interact with a wide array of software ecosystems. This extensive integration capability is central to Anthropic’s strategy of making Duet a versatile tool for managing complex professional tasks.

One of the more notable features of Duet is its ability to make online purchases on behalf of users. It can utilize Stripe’s Link digital wallet or Shopify’s Shop Pay to complete transactions. However, Anthropic emphasizes that sensitive steps, particularly those involving payments, will always require explicit user approval to prevent unauthorized spending.

To address security concerns, the company introduced a new classifier that scans each message to prevent the leakage of sensitive information. By default, the agent is programmed to decline requests that ask for credit card numbers or government identification numbers. Additionally, Anthropic clarified that Duet will not trade securities or move money between bank accounts, setting clear boundaries on its financial capabilities.

Claude Duet is currently available for iOS and Android devices, as well as on the web via Claude.ai. The application is accessible to Pro and Max customers who are in the research preview phase. Due to the high interest, users must currently join a waitlist to gain access to the platform, suggesting that Anthropic is managing rollout capacity carefully as it tests the agent's performance in real-world professional settings.
