USC head coach Lincoln Riley delivered a prepared statement at his postgame press conference on Saturday, Nov. 1, to address ongoing criticism of his leadership. The remarks followed a decisive victory that returned the No. 18 Trojans to the AP Top 25 and kept their College Football Playoff aspirations active.

Riley held a white sheet of paper and read aloud a message focused on internal program culture rather than external validation. He stated that the program is built on internal joy, not external applause, and dedicated the win to staff, players, and administrative leaders. The coach affirmed his belief that he is the right person for the job, provided that the people within the university agree with that assessment.

The win over Ohio State marked the highest victory for USC against a ranked opponent since a triumph over No. 2 Oklahoma in 2004. The Trojans held the Buckeyes to a season-low 18 points and prevented a touchdown until late in the fourth quarter. Ohio State dropped from No. 2 to No. 11 in the AP Top 25 following the defeat. Riley noted that the team virtually neutralized Ohio State receiver and Heisman Trophy candidate Jeremiah Smith.

The result ends a recent run of losses that had placed the team on the brink of elimination from playoff contention. Prior to Saturday, USC had suffered a 17-7 loss to Wisconsin, which knocked them out of the rankings, and a third consecutive defeat to Oregon that extended Riley’s record against ranked teams to 5-15. The Trojans also overcame a 21-10 deficit against Washington, a contest in which fans at the Coliseum chanted for Riley’s dismissal.

Offensive lineman Tobias Raymond echoed the theme of internal focus during the press conference. He stated that opinions from people outside the building do not matter as much as the dynamics among those inside it. Raymond described the win as a direct product of the team focusing on its own execution and playing Trojan football.

The Trojans now enter a bye week, a period they must manage carefully after a previous bye week ended in the loss to Wisconsin. Two ranked teams await them after the break: No. 6 Indiana and No. 5 UCLA. UCLA is currently unbeaten under head coach Bob Chesney, who is in his first year with the program.

The first College Football Playoff rankings are scheduled for release on Tuesday, Nov. 2. Riley suggested that the drop in Ohio State’s standing could cause shifts in the rankings. He told reporters to look at the situation across the country and noted that teams which stay together and continue to improve will likely be the ones present at the end of the season.
