Drivers on Richmond Highway in Fairfax County faced lane closures and traffic delays following a collision between a commercial vehicle and a public school bus on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred at the intersection of Richmond Highway, also known as Route 1, and Mohawk Lane in the Woodlawn district.

Fairfax County Police Department officers and fire rescue units received calls for the crash at approximately 4:56 p.m. The collision involved a white pickup truck and a Fairfax County Public Schools bus. Emergency responders transported the truck driver to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. An adult female passenger riding on the school bus was also taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Police confirmed that no children were present on the school bus at the time of the accident. The vehicle was operating without students during the afternoon rush hour. The specific cause of the collision is under investigation by local authorities.

Traffic flow was disrupted for several hours following the crash. By shortly after 6 p.m., police reported that two southbound lanes and one northbound lane of Richmond Highway remained closed for investigation. Officials advised motorists to seek alternate routes to avoid the congestion caused by the scene.

The incident highlights the ongoing risk of collisions involving heavy vehicles and public transit on major arterial roads in the county. The truck was identified as a white pickup on emergency scanners. The school bus was part of the regular Fairfax County Public Schools fleet.

Both injured individuals are currently receiving medical care. The truck driver's condition remains serious, while the bus passenger is expected to recover from her injuries. Police continue to manage traffic at the intersection as they gather evidence and witness statements.
