1Password Lets AI Agents Sign In Without Ever Seeing Your Passwords

A new feature called 1Password for Agents lets AI assistants log in to websites on a user's behalf while keeping the actual credentials hidden from them.

1Password announced a new feature on October 22 that is meant to let AI agents sign in to websites using a person's stored passwords without ever seeing those passwords. Called 1Password for Agents, it targets a growing problem: as AI agents become more capable, handling account credentials has turned into a sticking point.

The tool connects a user's password vault to an AI agent, such as Meta's Muse. When the agent needs to get into a website, it asks for permission to sign in. 1Password then supplies the required information, but only after the user approves the request.

The key design choice is that the agent does not perform the login itself. 1Password handles the sign-in, and the credentials stay hidden from the agent throughout. The user remains in control of whether each request goes ahead.

1Password describes the process in several steps. When an agent reaches a sign-in form, it uses a unique digital key to verify its identity to 1Password. The person is shown which credential the agent needs and why, and then chooses whether to approve. If they do, 1Password fills the credential directly into the form.

Once the website accepts the login, 1Password removes the credential so the agent "can't read or reuse it" as it continues with its task, according to the company. The rest of the user's password vault also stays out of the agent's reach.

As 9to5Google noted in its coverage, the approach still involves a degree of trust. Even so, it appears considerably safer than simply handing an AI agent a set of passwords.

For now, the integration works only with Muse and Grok Bot. 1Password says support for more agents is in the works, including OpenAI's Dots and Anthropic's Claude Duet.

Claude Duet is described as Anthropic's proactive AI agent, positioned as a response to Muse and to OpenAI's Dots. The planned support suggests 1Password is aiming to cover the main agents in this emerging category as they arrive.
